If religions are diseases of the human psyche, as the philosopher Grintholde asserts, then religious wars must be reckoned the resultant sores and cankers infecting the aggregate corpus of the human race. Of all wars, these are the most detestable, since they are waged for no tangible gain, but only to impose a set of arbitrary credos upon another's mind. Jack Vance
About This Quote

Grintholde is a fictional character that was created by the Canadian-American playwright Eugene O'Neill in his 1915 play "The Emperor Jones." O'Neill created this character to address the issue of racism. The play itself was not based on any historical person or event, but was instead inspired by the slave trade. Grintholde represents all of slavery's many evils, including greed, intolerance, and racism. Grintholde does not believe in freedom for anyone except white people. O’Neill uses this character to try to get inside the head of someone who believes that his own race is somehow superior to others.
